The Project
Katie's first project - The Challenge 2006 - started off life as a fund raising adventure to raise money for the Ellen MacArthur Trust by re-tracing Ellen's original solo circumnavigation of the British Isles in a 21ft Corribee. Little did we know at the time that Katie would finish the year being awarded the Raymarine YJA Young Sailor of the Year award, just as Ellen had 11 years earlier.

Katie's latest project will see her swap her Corribee for a Beneteau Figaro II. The race schedule for 2008 includes a combination of fully-crewed, double-handed and solo events with a variety of talented crew as well as training sessions with some of the top names in the sport. The main event for this year is the bluQube 1000 mile Solo race starting at the end of June. The first half of 2009 follows a similar pattern until Katie has finished her degree at which point it's straight to Plymouth for the start of the OSTAR.

The OSTAR is the Original Single-handed Trans-Atlantic Race that was first run in 1960 when it was won by Francis Chichester in Gipsy Moth III. The 2009 race will leave Plymouth on the 25th May and head for Newport, Rhode Island on the East coast of the United States. Katie is currently both the youngest and the only female entrant.

Katie is currently keeping her options open beyond the successful completion of the OSTAR but the one ultimate goal remains - the 2016 Vendee Globe.
